∂AIL Professor Tuan Hsio-fu, Chairman↓Department of Mathematics
↓Peking University↓Peking, China∞

Dear Professor Tuan:

Professor Hsu Kung-shih has asked me to write confirming my oral
statement that the Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
could receive Mr. Ma Shi-wen as a post-doctoral scholar for a
period of up to one year.
On the basis of Mr. Ma's description of his research interests and activities
given during my visit to Peking University, it looks like such a visit
would be of mutual benefit.
We could provide him with office space, use of
the computer, and access to general university facilities. We cannot pay
travelling or living expenses or a salary. I think he would find many
people here with whom he shares scientific interests.

Mr. Ma would be welcome as soon as it is convenient for him to come
but before June 1, 1979. However, I will be on leave at the Center
for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences from September 1979 to
June 1980. This Center is at Stanford, so I will still be available
some of the time, and Mr. Ma will find many people here at the
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory with whom to work. Should it not
be convenient for him to come by June 1979, it might be better for him
to wait until June 1980.

In order to complete arrangements for
such a visit, I need a scientific biography
of Mr. Ma and a written statement of his research interests to circulate
to other members of the Computer Science Department. Once we have these, we can
act very quickly. Two pages about his research would be adequate, but
reprints of papers or reports would be welcome whether in English or
Chinese.

I also told Professor Hsu that I thought that Mr. Hung Chia-wei
would be an appropriate visitor to the group in our department working on
complexity theory. (The group comprises Professors Robert Floyd, Robert
Tarjan, Andrew Yao and Frances Yao). Mr. Hung's research looked
interesting, but they also need a a scientific biography and written
description of research interests before they can decide to make an
invitation.

I enclose a sheet that the International Center at Stanford
sends to foreign scholars visiting Stanford. The part about the
"Certificate of Eligibility" is not yet relevant, but the general
advice for foreign scholars will be useful.

Visits for Mr. Ma and Mr. Hung can be arranged either directly
with our department or as part of general agreements between
Stanford University and Chinese institutions. If they need
to take part in the English for Foreign Students program, then it
might be better to work within the general agreement, because the
number of students that can be accomodated in the English classes
is limited.

Finally, I would like to thank you for your hospitality
at Peking University.
